"The 48 Volt Phantom Menace Returns" to AES

THAT Corporation's applications engineers, Dr. Rosalfonso Bortoni and Wayne Kirkwood, have authored a new "Phantom Menace" paper which was presented at the 127th AES show in NYC. Previously THAT Corporation CTO Gary Hebert and former applications engineer Frank Thomas presented the original "Phantom Menace" paper at the 110th AES Convention [Convention Paper 5335] that described the phenomenon wherein microphone phantom power faults can damage audio input circuitry. Now, a few years later, Dr. Bortoni and Wayne Kirkwood provide new information about the phantom menace fault mechanisms, analyze common protection circuits, and introduce a new protection scheme that is more robust. In addition, new information is presented relating these input protection schemes to audio performance and recommendations are made to minimize noise and distortion.
