Milford, MA, USA  - THAT Corporation has announced that Chief Technology Officer Gary Hebert will speak at the AES Conference in San Francisco, California, on November 5, 2010. The title of Mr. Hebert’s presentation is “Designing Microphone Preamplifiers” and will address the many challenges circuit designers face as the latest systems demand lower cost but high performance.

Mr. Hebert’s tutorial will stress microphone preamplifiers as a fundamental building block in professional audio systems, with a legacy reaching back to the beginning of recording. Hebert’s tutorial will provide a primer on microphone preamplifier design requirements, potential fault conditions and solutions. A sampling of amplifier circuits and topologies will also be presented, with a discussion on the compromises between cost, size, power consumption, noise, THD, CMR and other factors.

“Preferences and opinions on preamplifiers are nearly a religion within the professional audio community where the microphone preamp often defines the signature sound of a piece of equipment or even a recording studio,” stated Gary Hebert. He added, “The preamp’s performance, in harmony with the microphone, must exceed nearly everything else in the system. In addition, as the first line of defense to the outside world, it must withstand hostile conditions such as 48 V phantom power faults or erroneously patched hot signals.”

About the AES Convention
The 129th AES convention will be held at the San Francisco Moscone Center on November 5 - 7, 2010. For over 60 years, the AES has conducted a conference that has been the largest gathering of audio professionals and enthusiasts on the globe, attracting delegates from over 100 countries worldwide.
