THAT Corporation Appointment Augments
DI Wafer Processing Expertise

Carol Turgeon
Senior Manufacturing
 Engineer

MILFORD, MA – THAT Corporation continues to strengthen its expertise in dielectric isolation (DI) wafer processing with the addition of Carol Turgeon as Senior Manufacturing Engineer. In this position Carol is responsible for overseeing the critical processes used in THAT’s new Wafer Grind and Chemical/Mechanical Polishing Center located at its headquarters in Milford.

THAT Corporation’s high-performance integrated circuits rely on a unique dielectric isolation IC technology to deliver a number of important advantages over conventional junction isolation process, including higher bandwidths, better inter-device breakdown voltages, and sonic performance comparable to discrete designs. A critical and difficult step in the manufacture of DI components is the precision grinding and polishing of the silicon wafers themselves to tolerances on the order of one micron, a process that THAT is bringing in-house.

Turgeon significantly advances THAT’s core DI competency by bringing over 20 years of design and manufacturing experience developing precision grinding, lapping and polishing tools and operations. During his eleven years at Quantum Corporation he established the Tape Heads mechanical development laboratory, served on the engineering team responsible for supporting Quantum’s micro-machining process, and played a key role in new product design as Lead Mechanical Engineer for the Advanced Tape Drive Development Group. Most recently, as Technical Lead Engineer at CiDRA Corporation, Turgeon led a team of design engineers in the development of precision manufacturing tools, including high-resolution micro-positioning/motion stages. Turgeon holds a patent, along with several pending applications, for the development of precision lapping tools and processes.

Carol obtained his BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Lowell (Massachusetts) and an MS in Engineering Science and Mechanics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute where he specialized in the mechanics and manufacture of composite materials. In his off hours, Carol enjoys spending time with his two sons, camping and ice hockey.
