The THAT 2162 contains two high-performance
Blackmer®
voltage-controlled amplifiers (VCAs). With two opposing-polarity,
voltage-sensitive control ports, they offer wide-range exponential
control of gain and attenuation with low signal distortion. Both VCAs
are trimmed at wafer stage to deliver low distortion and
control-voltage feedthrough without further adjustment. However,
external symmetry adjustment is possible to further optimize
distortion and control feedthrough for critical applications.
The 2162 operates from a split power supply up to ±16
Vdc, drawing only 5.2mA at ±15V and 3 mA at ±5V. The part can also
operate at supply voltages as low as ±2.25V, making it suitable for
battery-operated applications.
The two VCAs are independent of each other, sharing
only their power supply connections. The 2162 is extremely flexible
and capable of being configured for a wide range of stereo or
multichannel applications. It is available in a RoHS-compliant 16-pin
QSOP package.
THAT Blackmer
VCAs are the successors to the original dbx line of
VCAs. To overcome the problems related to limited GBW product, this
new series of VCAs, was developed by Gary Hebert in a dielectrically
isolated process, and has topological enhancements that minimize the
effect of non-linearities in the VCA drive circuitry on high frequency
distortion. These VCAs are equal or superior to their predecessors in
every regard, and in particular, do not exhibit the rising distortion at
higher frequencies characteristic of VCAs built on a junction isolated
process.

We offer a demonstration system (US$100)
which simplifies evaluating the performance of a 2162 VCA IC. It implements several typical applications that showcase the utility of a dual VCA - stereo audio level control with better than 1dB gain matching, constant power panning (for mono signals) and balance (for stereo signals), and a 2-in/1-out crossfader. You can adjust these parameters using on-board pots or by applying an external DC control voltage (CV) via banana connectors. Inputs and outputs are available on balanced TRS or XLR connectors via high performance THAT1243 and THAT1606 OutSmarts™ balanced line receivers/drivers. Contact us for more information.
